Risk assessments are used to determine the potential harm that exposure to a pollutant or drug can cause. Hazard is the capability of a substance to cause an adverse effect. Risk is the probability that the hazard will occur under specific exposure conditions. Risk assessment is the process by which hazard and exposure are evaluated, and risk determined. Public health officials then consider the risk and select the most appropriate action to protect the public. This last process is known as risk management.
